Council values community input, but recognises that sometimes only a few voices are heard and that many people do not participate in community discussions for a variety of reasons.
The Devonport City Council is seeking to increase community participation in its decision making processes and has prepared a draft policy on 'community engagement' to increase opportunities for the public to be informed, involved and heard by the Council.
The draft policy places a greater emphasis on community participation to ensure that community views are heard by the Council.
"The Council already uses various methods to encourage community participation, but community members often feel that their input is not heard, or is sought too late in the process," General Manager, Mr McCallum said. "This policy sets out a more pro-active approach, which increases the opportunities for meaningful input from start to finish. In many cases, we should be seeking direct community involvement at the earliest possible opportunity, so that community views can help to shape the final outcome."
